How EMS Machines Support Muscle Recovery and Rehabilitation

EMS Machines

In physical therapy and sports medicine, Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) is a powerful tool for supporting muscle recovery, enhancing rehabilitation, and improving physical performance. According to this resource by the University of Queensland, electrical muscle stimulation is similar to electrical nerve stimulation and works as a bridge to conventional exercise.

EMS is an alternating electrical current (AC) or modulated direct current (DC) that passes through the tissues for pain relief. The difference is that the intensity is significantly higher and leads to more muscle contractions.

In this blog, we’ll explore how EMS works, its many applications in physical therapy and performance enhancement, and the range of EMS and TENS machines available at Access Health. Whether you’re recovering from injury, supporting a loved one in rehab, or seeking tools to manage chronic pain, EMS technology could be the key to faster, safer healing.

What Does an EMS Machine Do ?

EMS Machine Do

What does the current supplied by an EMS machine do? Applied locally or to the entire body, TENS and EMS machines stimulate the muscles to contract through electrodes being placed onto the skin, preventing muscle wasting when they will not work by themselves. The EMS machine is especially useful if your muscles are expected to work later on.

The current (in most cases) exhibits pain in the tissues surrounding these electrodes, and higher intensities stimulate rhythmic contractions which can re-educate muscles, help muscle atrophy, boost muscle strength, and improve range of motion.

In this study by the National Institute of Health, 39 participants completed a study testing the effects of electrical muscle stimulation. Here were the results:

  • One group showed more efficient contraction in most of the evaluated muscles.
  • The resting muscle thickness didn’t differ between the two groups, but the contracted muscle thickness was higher in one group than the other.
  • Physical performance and body composition were not significantly different.
  • Finally, no intervention-related complications were reported during the study.

In conclusion, EMS seems to be a safe and reasonable option for improving physical fitness in healthy individuals.

EMS is done with an electrical device that should only be provided by a qualified practitioner.

Why Does an EMS Machine Work So Well?

Although an EMS machine isn’t new to rehabilitation, recent advancements in technology have made it more effective than ever before. But why else do so many choose to use these units?

Builds muscle strength

An EMS machine supports patients in reactivating dormant muscles (for example, breaking a pelvic floor and needing to learn how to walk).

It strengthens underused muscles, enhances joint stability, and helps coordination, so it is often integrated into physical therapy and performance training.

Versatile applications

No matter your age or recovery goal, the right EMS machine and application can help you. Whether you’re a professional athlete aiming to heighten performance or dealing with chronic pain, you’ll probably be able to find an EMS machine at Access Health that can help you.

Pain reduction and quicker recovery

EMS machines are widely used to reduce pain, inflammation, and the recovery period after surgeries or injury by increasing blood flow to affected areas, flushing out waste and bringing any nutrients that support healing for patients.
