Being able to properly position and treat a patient is something no practitioner takes for granted. The right tables and couches will help ensure your patient is comfortable at all times while still allowing you to assess, move, and manipulate their body as needed.
Most treatment couches will come in two varieties: two-section and three-section. These can look quite different and are suitable for different uses, so it’s important to make sure you choose the right one for the treatments you intend to apply.

Treatment couches are often called examination couches, massage couches, or medical couches. These all refer to the long, secure and mobile couches used for general treatments in physiotherapy and medical clinics.

Treatment couches often have more than one section–a straight, single-section couch is referred to as a ‘plinth’.
You can also find more specialised treatment couches on the market, such as bariatric couches, dialysis couches, and traction couches. But these should only be used for specific therapies, and not as general treatment couches.
The classic two-section couch is an L-shaped piece of equipment with a straight, horizontal base and a backrest that can be adjusted from almost perfectly vertical to totally flat. These treatment couches are suitable for therapies that require the patient to lie down, such as therapeutic massage, physiotherapy applications, and simply moving patients between rooms as needed.

Three-section couches feature the additional ability to adjust the angle at which the patient’s legs are lying. This ability makes them more suitable for procedures and treatments that require the patient to be sitting up, although, like two-section couches, three-section couches can also be adjusted so they are lying completely flat.
